KKH (Karakoram Highway) is generally well-maintained but expect narrow sections, landslides after rain, and unpaved stretches near remote valleys.
Petrol pumps are plentiful on main highways but sparse in remote valleys like Deosai and upper Hunza. Fill up at major towns — never let the tank go below half.
A 4x4 is strongly recommended for Deosai Plains, Fairy Meadows road, and Astore Valley. Sedans are fine for KKH, Naran, and Swat roads.
Islamabad to Hunza takes ~12 hours (550 km). Add 2–3 hours for photo stops, meals, and road checks. Start early to avoid driving after dark on mountain roads.
